Ice Safety Tips

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura, coordinator of the Essex County Office of Emergency Management, today issued this fresh water Winter Ice Safety advisory to local residents. “When weather and ice conditions permit ice skating is allowed on the ponds at Verona and Grover Cleveland parks,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “County parks department personnel inspect the safety of the ice conditions at these two parks on a daily basis. If the ice is determined to be unsafe skating is not permitted. Ice skating is also not permitted in any of the other outdoor locations throughout the Essex County park system.”

Drug Raids Net 5 Suspects

Newark – Five suspects were arraigned this morning on multiple drug charges following their arrests yesterday in two separate raids conducted by federal and county narcotics investigators. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics and agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration executed simultaneous search warrants at two locations as part of an on-going investigation at Wynona Lipman Gardens on Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff Fontoura said the task force officers announced their presence at 133 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard made a forced entry into the ground floor apartment after hearing persons inside the residence yelling “Police, police”.

Warming Centers Opened

Essex County, NJ - On Monday, February 23d, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced the Essex County's Code Blue procedures are being activated because extreme cold weather in the forecast. The Code Blue will be in effect starting Monday, February 23'd al 4 p.m. to Saturday, February 28th at 9 a.m. "Providing our homeless residents with a warm place to stay during extreme weather conditions is important for their safety and well-being. We thank our participating shelters and warming stations who are working with us to open their doors in these times of need," DiVincenzo said. Conditions for a Code Blue are defined as when the temperature drops below 15 degrees for a 48-hour period or when the wind chill is below 0 degrees. When those conditions are met, or when the weather forecast predicts these conditions, the County Executive can proclaim a Code Blue and enact the procedure. When a Code Blue is declared, a network of warming stations operated by the County and its municipalities and shelters operated by the community based organizations will be opened. The warming stations identified include Essex County Codey Arena and a variety of public libraries, senior centers, civic and community centers, school buildings, houses of worship, firehouses and first aid squad buildings. Warming stations are generally opened during the day and may not provide overnight accommodations. Shelters do provide overnight accommodations. ln addition, shelters that regularly require occupants to leave during the day will suspend that practice so people can stay indoors. Prescription Drug Arrests

Newark – Three suspects charged with multiple drug offenses were arraigned this morning following their arrests on Wednesday evening by Essex County sheriff’s detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that as part on an on-going investigation officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant last night for a bodega located at the intersection of Orange and Nesbitt streets in Newark.
