Reward Offer in Newark Man's Murder

Newark – Law enforcement authorities today posted a cash reward offer in the case of a city man who was shot to death in the hallway of his residence last Friday. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that his department’s Crimestoppers program will pay up to $10,000 for details that lead to an arrest of the suspect wanted in the murder of Alim Abdul-Ghafer, age 35, of 270 Washington Street. The shooting occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:48 p.m. The homicide is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Persons with information about the murder are asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 877-847-7432 or 973-621-4586. Deputy Saves Elderly Man from Choking

Fairfield – With on-duty law enforcement on heighten alert due to increased, yet unspecified, federal monitoring of ISIS threats to Americans, an off-duty Essex County sheriff’s volunteer deputy saved the life of an elderly male at a local restaurant. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Deputy Chris Cannon and his family and friends were waiting for a table shortly before 7:00 p.m. this evening when they were alerted that a late 60-year-old male diner was suffering choke symptoms at Franklin Steak House on Passaic Avenue.

Suspect Arrested in Newark's North Ward on Gun and Drug Charges

Newark – As part of a series on on-going investigations into drug trafficking in the city’s North Ward, Essex County sheriff’s detectives today executed a search warrant for a third floor apartment at 175 Woodside Avenue. Sheriff Armando Fontoura said his department’s Bureau of Narcotics detectives made a forced entry into the fortified apartment at 1:20 p. m. on Thursday. “At that time, the target of our investigation, 20year-old Alhaddudin Powell Thompson, was observed throwing a plastic bag out of his kitchen window,” Fontoura noted. “The bag was recovered immediately and was found to contain a fully loaded, .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, more than 33 grams of cocaine in both loose and packaged form and 44 glassine envelopes of heroin, stamped ‘Harry Potter’ in green ink.”

Suspects Arrested & Arraigned on Gun and Drug Charges

Newark – Two alleged suspects were arraigned today on weapons and drug charges following their arrests on Tuesday by Essex County sheriff’s detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that in response to numerous complaints of drug trafficking in the Vailsburg section of the city from local residents and business owners his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation in the area of Isabella Avenue and Plymouth Street yesterday afternoon. “As soon as our officers positioned themselves, they recognized two suspects, one loitering in front of and the other sitting on the steps of 113 Isabella Avenue, with whom they had had previous encounters”, Sheriff Fontoura noted.

Reward Offer Increased in Henderson Murder

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura today announced that his department’s Crimestoppers cash reward offer for information that leads to an arrest in last week’s shooting death of a Newark high school student has increased and now stands at up to $7,000. “Donors from our community who wish to remain anonymous have contacted us and have pledged additional funding to our initial reward offer of $5,000,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “These anonymous donors have been shocked and outraged by the circumstances surrounding the death of this promising young woman.” Tammy Henderson, age 19, was with friends in front of a South 11th Street residence late on Thursday night when a gunman opened fire into the crowd. Henderson was struck by the gunfire and died of her wounds the next morning. Persons with information about the crime are urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 1-877-847-7432. All calls to law enforcement will be kept confidential.
