Fugitive Round-Up Nets 8

Newark – In a series of pre-dawn raids, eight wanted fugitives were arrested by law enforcement officers who were participating in a federal/state/county/municipal task force. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that the raids were the result of Mobile Deployment Initiative Route 21 Corridor and the participating agencies were the New Jersey State Police, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Marshals Service, the New Jersey State Parole and the Newark, Bloomfield, Nutley and Harrison police departments.

Career Criminal Arrested with Heroin, "Crack" & Marijuana

Newark – A female suspect with ten prior felony convictions was arraigned this morning on multiple drug charges following her arrest yesterday afternoon by a joint task force of Essex County sheriff’s and Bloomfield police detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that his department’s Bureau of Narcotics officers and Bloomfield police detectives surrounded the perimeter of 43 Hickory Street in Bloomfield on Tuesday before executing a search warrant for the second floor apartment as part of an on-going drug investigation in the township.

Surviving "The Big Chill"

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura, coordinator of the Essex County Office of Emergency Management, today provided local residents with the following tips for the severe winter weather which New Jersey is expected to experience during the next few days. “Everyone should take precautions as weather experts believe we will see some of the coldest temperatures of the past few years,” Sheriff Fontoura said. “Wind gusts of up to 40 mph and wind chills of -15 to -20 degrees are in the weather forecast.” To ward off the impact of frostbite and hypothermia Fontoura recommended the following:

"Code Blue" In Effect For Essex County

Essex County, NJ - On Friday, February 13th, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced the Essex County's Code Blue procedures are being activated because extreme cold weather in the forecast. The Code Blue will be in effect starting Friday, February 13th at 4 p.m. to Wednesday, February 18th at 9 a.m. "Providing our homeless residents with a warm place to stay during extreme weather conditions is important for their safety and well-being. We thank our participating shelters and warming stations who are working with us to open their doors in these times-of need," DiVincenzo said.

Winter Driving Tips

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura, coordinator of the Essex County Office of Emergency Management, today issued the following Winter Driving Tips for local motorists. For increased safety on snow-covered and icy roads: Motorists should decrease speed and leave three times the amount room between their vehicle and the one in front of them to stop; Tap on your brakes repeatedly, but gently, to avoid skidding; Always drive with your lights on to increase your visibility to other drivers; When driving uphill, use lower gears to maintain traction.
