Reward Offer in Arson Crime

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced today that the Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program is offering a cash reward up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for torching Newark mayoral candidate Ras Baraka’s campaign bus. On Sunday, Feb. 16 at approximately 7 a.m. the Newark Fire Department responded to a bus fire in the 400 block of Central Avenue. Arriving units extinguished a small fire in the interior of bus. The bus is a campaign bus used by the Baraka campaign. No one was on the bus and no one was injured. Based on the preliminary investigation the fire appears to have been intentionally set. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Task Force is handling the investigation which is active and ongoing. Gun, Drugs, Stolen Goods Recovered; Suspects Arrested

Newark - Two suspects were arrested this afternoon by Essex County sheriff's detectives and narcotics, weapons and theft charges were filed against them. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department's Bureau of Narcotics, armed with a search warrant, made a forced entry into the second floor apartment of 915 Lake Street. At that time, a suspect, later identified as Angel Castellanos, age 29, ran to the rear of the apartment and threw a fully loaded, defaced, Cobra 380 semi-automatic handgun out of a bedroom window. The weapon was immediately recovered by sheriff's officers who had surrounded the building.

Drug Suspect Arrested & Arraigned

Newark - Instead of serving up "value meals" from a porch of 111 S. 10th St, a drug suspect was arrested late yesterday afternoon by Essex County Sheriff's detectives after they discovered a significant quantity of heroin, "crack" cocaine , and marijuana in a Popeye's chicken bag that he was holding. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department's Bureau of Narcotics were conducting a quality of life detail in Newark's North Ward when they observed a man, later identified as Anthony Taylor, age 25 of Newark, retrieve items from a Popeye's chicken bag and engage in what appeared to be a drug transaction.

Suspects Arraigned on Heroin, 'Crack' Cocaine Charges

Newark - Two male and one female suspects were arraigned today on drug charges following their arrests on Friday by Essex County sheriff's detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department's Bureau of Narcotics and Tactical Response Team conducted a pre-dawn raid and executed a search warrant on a suspected drug stash, located at 410 Summer Avenue in the city's North Ward. The raid was the result of a two-week investigation by sheriff's detectives which was prompted by numerous neighborhood complaints of narcotics trafficking in the area. As the BON detectives secured the perimeter of the three story residence, TRT detectives made a forced entry into the building.

Suspects Arrested; Heroin & Marijuana Seized

Newark - Two male suspects were arraigned today on drug charges following their arrest late yesterday afternoon by Essex County sheriff's detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department's Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant on Thursday at Hometown Liquor Store, located at 69 7th Avenue, after a three-week investigation which was prompted by neighborhood complaints of drug trafficking in the North Ward.
