Suspect Arrested; Guns & Drugs Seized

Newark – A suspect was arraigned today on weapons and drug charges following his arrest by Essex County sheriff’s officers on Friday.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a surveillance operation and executed a search warrant for the second floor apartment at 51 Oakland Avenue on Friday morning.

When the BON detectives observed Earl Easterling, age 39, exit his garage at that location he and his wife were detained. With the garage door open the sheriff’s officers spotted the handle of a weapon protruding from under a towel on top of a washing machine.

Hotline for post-Irene Health Issues

The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services has established a telephone center for health-related questions stemming from Hurricane Irene.

Experts will provide information about how to prevent and treat mold, dispose of spoiled food and whether the water is safe to drink.

The call center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and during the weekend and Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FEMA Opens Hotline & Website for Recovery Assistance

Essex County residents and business owners can begin seeking federal assistance to recover from Hurricane Irene.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured or underinsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover.

Residents and businesses can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

Burglary Suspects Arrested

NewarkEssex County sheriff’s officers arrested three suspects last night at the United Hospital center in the city and charged them with burglary.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers on patrol at the former medical site observed that a forced entry had been made at the facility shortly before midnight.
