Reward Offers: Maplewood Assault & Irvington Murder

Newark – Cash rewards were posted today in unsolved cases regarding an aggravated assault in Maplewood and an Irvington homicide.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that the Crimestoppers program would pay up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the brutal attack on a female secretary in the St. Joseph Church rectory, located at 256 Franklin Avenue, on the morning of March 14, 2012.

CORRECTION

In an incident that occurred on May 7, 2012 and reported in The Star – Ledger on May 8, 2012, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office’s press release was in error in categorizing Ms. Kiyana Ellison as a suspect in a motor vehicle stop which led to a drug arrest.

Ms. Ellison was not present on this occasion.

The correct name of the suspect is Anthony Ellison, age 24, of Newark.

The sheriff’s office regrets this error.

 
Block Unwanted Telephone Calls

Newark – In an effort to minimize unwanted telephone calls from telemarketers, whether on your cell phone, work phone or home phone, Sheriff Armando Fontoura today advised Essex County residents to register their various telephone numbers with the National Do Not Call Registry.

You may register your telephone numbers on-line at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222. If you call to register your telephone number you must do it from the telephone number you wish to register.

Drug Suspects Arrested

Newark – A city man, one of two drug suspects arrested yesterday by Essex County sheriff’s officers, was arraigned today in central Criminal Processing court.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Patrol Division were conducting quality of life operations at Clinton Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, a known high drug trafficking area, late on Monday morning.

At that time, the sheriff’s officers observed a 2012 Honda Accord with three occupants who were not wearing seatbelts, traveling north on King Blvd. The Honda then improperly passed another vehicle and turned on a red light without stopping.
