Essex OEM Prepared for "Irene"

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura, Essex County emergency management coordinator, today advised area residents to prepare for the impact of hurricane “Irene” which is expected to hit New Jersey on Saturday. The sheriff further advised that the Essex County Office of Emergency Management is fully prepared to mitigate the impact of the pending storm.

Essex County residents should have already compiled items for an emergency supply kit, including water, food, first aid equipment, medications and batteries,” Sheriff Fontoura said. “Complete information about emergency supplies can be found on our website,, and other websites.”

High Noon Arrest for Armed Drug Suspect

Newark – A city man was arraigned today on weapons and drug charges following his arrest yesterday by Essex County sheriff’s detectives.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation in the area 135 – 169 Elizabeth Avenue at noon on Thursday where they observed a 21-year-old male, later identified as Isiah Jackson, loitering in front of the apartment complex.

Moments later, an unidentified male approached Jackson, also known as Samir Walker, and, after a brief conversation, Jackson exchanged an item from his pants pocket with the man for cash. The unidentified man walked away from the scene.

Heroin Suspect Arrested

Newark – A male suspect was arraigned today on drug charges following his arrest by Essex County sheriff’s detectives.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes investigation in the area of 123 South 14th Street, a known high intensity drug trafficking area, shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Monday.

At that time, the BON detectives spotted a suspect, later identified as Latif Holley, age 18, sitting on an orange bucket in an alleyway between two buildings. Holley was approached by a male and they engaged in a brief conversation. Holley then lifted the bucket, retrieved an item and exchanged it with the passerby for cash.

Reward for Info in Newark Hit & Run

Newark – Law enforcement authorities today posted a cash reward offer in a case involving a non-fatal hit-and-run that occurred in Newark on June 2, 2011.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura said the Crimestoppers program would pay up to $1,000 for details that lead to the arrest of the person who was driving a white, four-door, 2002 – 2004 Toyota Corolla which struck and seriously injured a 55-year-old female in the area of 442 Frelinghuysen Avenue. The incident occurred at 11:00 p.m.
