Suspect in Carjacking Arrested in Branchbrook Park

Newark – Ten hours after a knifepoint carjacking in Elizabeth a suspect was taken into custody and the vehicle was recovered by Essex County sheriff’s officers.
 
According to Sheriff Armando Fontoura, Jose Toledo, age 18, pulled into the parking lot at the visitors center at Branch Brook Park adjacent to Rick Cerone Field today shortly after 4:00 a.m. Toledo was driving a 2004 red Honda Civic which was also occupied by a 16-year-old female. The driver and passenger are both residents of Newark.
 
Sheriff Fontoura said that Officer Giuseppe Forgione was on fixed patrol at that location and conducted a license plate check on the vehicle. The Honda was reported to have been carjacked at knifepoint at Alina Street and Jefferson Avenue in Elizabeth at 6:00 p.m on Thursday.
 
Toledo was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. He is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail set by Superior Court Judge Amilkar Velez – Lopez.

The female juvenile was not charged and released in the custody of her mother.

Elizabeth police took custody of the vehicle and further charges against Toledo are pending out of Elizabeth.

 
200 Club of Essex County Annual Valor Awards Luncheon

Newark – The 200 Club of Essex County, founded to assist the families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty and the oldest such organization of its kind, will hold its 2008 Valor Awards luncheon on Thursday, May 7th at Mayfair Farms in West Orange at 11:30 a.m.
Established in 1966, The 200 Club of Essex County has raised nearly $2 million to support the spouses of fallen officers and to fund scholarships for their children through membership dues and the annual luncheon.
