Drug Suspects Arrested; Heroin & "Crack" Seized

Newark - Two North Ward men were arraigned today on multiple drug charges following their arrest on Friday by Essex County sheriff's detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department's Bureau of Narcotics, armed with a search warrant for the first floor apartment at 458 Summer Avenue, conducted a surveillance operation at that location on Friday morning. Fontoura said that at that time the plainclothes BON officers observed a 2001 Chevrolet pick-up truck park in front of the residence where Barbara Walsh, age 24, of Kearny, exited the vehicle.

4 Drug Suspects Arrested & Arraigned

Newark - Four alleged suspects were arraigned today on drug charges following their arrests yesterday during three separate incidents by Essex County sheriff's detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department's Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation shortly before noon at the intersection of Irvine Turner Boulevard and 18th Avenue. At that time, Sheriff Fontoura said the BON detectives observed two males, later identified as Laquan Jackson, age 29, of Newark, and Naji Hicks, age 24, of East Orange, loitering in the area. Within minutes, the two suspects were approached by two males and a female. After a brief conversation, all five individual walked down a nearby alleyway where Jackson and Hicks were observed exchanging items from their waistbands for paper currency.

Reward Offer in Double Homicide Case

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced today that a cash reward up to $10,000 is being offered by the Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Manu Smith, 24, of Hillside and Harry Lovengood, 21, of Newark. The two young men were fatally shot in the 100 block of Milford Avenue in Newark on Saturday Feb. 15 at approximately12:20 a.m. They were both pronounced dead a short time later. Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced today that the Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program is offering a cash reward up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for torching Newark mayoral candidate Ras Baraka’s campaign bus. On Sunday, Feb. 16 at approximately 7 a.m. the Newark Fire Department responded to a bus fire in the 400 block of Central Avenue. Arriving units extinguished a small fire in the interior of bus. The bus is a campaign bus used by the Baraka campaign. No one was on the bus and no one was injured. Based on the preliminary investigation the fire appears to have been intentionally set. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Task Force is handling the investigation which is active and ongoing. Gun, Drugs, Stolen Goods Recovered; Suspects Arrested

Newark - Two suspects were arrested this afternoon by Essex County sheriff's detectives and narcotics, weapons and theft charges were filed against them. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department's Bureau of Narcotics, armed with a search warrant, made a forced entry into the second floor apartment of 915 Lake Street. At that time, a suspect, later identified as Angel Castellanos, age 29, ran to the rear of the apartment and threw a fully loaded, defaced, Cobra 380 semi-automatic handgun out of a bedroom window. The weapon was immediately recovered by sheriff's officers who had surrounded the building.
