Three Suspects Arrested on Gun and Drug Charges

Irvington – Three suspects were arrested last night on multiple weapons and drug charges by Essex County sheriff’s detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that in response to complaints from local residents and business owners of open air drug trafficking at the intersection of Maple and Clinton Avenues his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation at that location on Monday night. “Our detectives observed two males loitering in front of 128 Maple Avenue just before 7:00 p.m. last night,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “A third male approached the pair and engaged in a brief conversation.”
IPhone Robbers Arrested

Newark – Two male juveniles were arrested last night and charged with robbery by Essex County sheriff’s officers. Sheriff Armando Fontoura said that at 7:00 p.m. on Monday a 17-year-old male juvenile reported to his department’s Patrol Division officers on duty at Weequahic Park that he had just been punched in the face and robbed of his IPhone in the park’s golf course parking lot.
Two Suspects Arrested & Arraigned on Drug Charges

Newark – Two alleged Crips street gang members were arraigned today on multiple drug charges following their arrests yesterday afternoon. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that a task force comprised of officers from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and the Bloomfield Police Department conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation near the intersection of Franklin Street and Willard Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. “At 2:00 p.m., our Bureau of Narcotics detectives and Bloomfield police observed a green 1992 Acura Legend appear on the scene and drive into the rear parking lot of 159 Franklin Street,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “Both the driver of the vehicle and his passenger were known to our officers and the task force moved in to further investigate.”
Reward Offer in Newark Man's Murder

Newark – Law enforcement authorities today posted a cash reward offer in the case of a city man who was shot to death in the hallway of his residence last Friday. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that his department’s Crimestoppers program will pay up to $10,000 for details that lead to an arrest of the suspect wanted in the murder of Alim Abdul-Ghafer, age 35, of 270 Washington Street. The shooting occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:48 p.m. The homicide is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Deputy Saves Elderly Man from Choking

Fairfield – With on-duty law enforcement on heighten alert due to increased, yet unspecified, federal monitoring of ISIS threats to Americans, an off-duty Essex County sheriff’s volunteer deputy saved the life of an elderly male at a local restaurant. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Deputy Chris Cannon and his family and friends were waiting for a table shortly before 7:00 p.m. this evening when they were alerted that a late 60-year-old male diner was suffering choke symptoms at Franklin Steak House on Passaic Avenue.
