Warming Centers Opened

Essex County, NJ - On Monday, February 23d, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced the Essex County's Code Blue procedures are being activated because extreme cold weather in the forecast. The Code Blue will be in effect starting Monday, February 23'd al 4 p.m. to Saturday, February 28th at 9 a.m. "Providing our homeless residents with a warm place to stay during extreme weather conditions is important for their safety and well-being. We thank our participating shelters and warming stations who are working with us to open their doors in these times of need," DiVincenzo said. Conditions for a Code Blue are defined as when the temperature drops below 15 degrees for a 48-hour period or when the wind chill is below 0 degrees. When those conditions are met, or when the weather forecast predicts these conditions, the County Executive can proclaim a Code Blue and enact the procedure. When a Code Blue is declared, a network of warming stations operated by the County and its municipalities and shelters operated by the community based organizations will be opened. The warming stations identified include Essex County Codey Arena and a variety of public libraries, senior centers, civic and community centers, school buildings, houses of worship, firehouses and first aid squad buildings. Warming stations are generally opened during the day and may not provide overnight accommodations. Shelters do provide overnight accommodations. ln addition, shelters that regularly require occupants to leave during the day will suspend that practice so people can stay indoors. Prescription Drug Arrests

Newark – Three suspects charged with multiple drug offenses were arraigned this morning following their arrests on Wednesday evening by Essex County sheriff’s detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that as part on an on-going investigation officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant last night for a bodega located at the intersection of Orange and Nesbitt streets in Newark.

Fugitive Round-Up Nets 8

Newark – In a series of pre-dawn raids, eight wanted fugitives were arrested by law enforcement officers who were participating in a federal/state/county/municipal task force. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that the raids were the result of Mobile Deployment Initiative Route 21 Corridor and the participating agencies were the New Jersey State Police, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Marshals Service, the New Jersey State Parole and the Newark, Bloomfield, Nutley and Harrison police departments.

Career Criminal Arrested with Heroin, "Crack" & Marijuana

Newark – A female suspect with ten prior felony convictions was arraigned this morning on multiple drug charges following her arrest yesterday afternoon by a joint task force of Essex County sheriff’s and Bloomfield police detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that his department’s Bureau of Narcotics officers and Bloomfield police detectives surrounded the perimeter of 43 Hickory Street in Bloomfield on Tuesday before executing a search warrant for the second floor apartment as part of an on-going drug investigation in the township.
