Distracted Driving Enforcement Initiative to Begin April 1st

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura today advised local motorists that officers from his department will conduct distracted Driver Enforcement Operations throughout all of Essex County’s 22 municipalities from April 1st through April 21st. Sheriff Fontoura said this initiative has been funded by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and it is being undertaken to prevent further deaths and injuries to drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Reward Offer in Retired Firefighter's Death

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Irvington Police Chief Michael Chase announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the Irvington Police are investigating the death of 88-year-old Donald Dreher. Yesterday at approximately 11:22 a.m. Dreher, a retired firefighter, was found dead in his home in the 700 block of 18th Avenue when Irvington Police officers made a welfare check.

Fontoura To Congress: Beef Up Chemical Plant Safety

Washington, D. C. – Sheriff Armando Fontoura and three other public safety and public health experts today advised members of the United States Congress that our nation’s First Responders and hospitals need more money, training and research to effectively prepare with the threat of terrorist attacks on our nation’s chemical plants. “More must be done and the federal government has to lead the way,” Sheriff Fontoura said at a hearing before the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications. Sheriff Fontoura pointed out that the portion of US 95 which runs through the eastern portion of Essex County has been categorized by the New York Times as “America’s two most dangerous miles”. “We do not disagree with this designation,” Fontoura added.

Convicted Killer Re-Arrested

East Orange – The convicted killer in a 1994 Arcola, Virginia, double homicide was arrested this morning in a pre-dawn raid by Essex County sheriff’s detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated officers from his department’s Detective Bureau and Tactical Response Team executed a Virginia Parole Board arrest warrant for David Moore, age 37, at his mother’s William Street residence. Moore violated of the terms of his parole on August 24, 2014 when he was arrested by East Orange police on weapons and drug charges.

2 Suspects Arrested & Arraigned on Meth Distribution Charges

Newark – A wheelchair-bound suspect and his alleged roommate accomplice were arraigned today on drug charges following their arrest on Tuesday by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and Bloomfield police officers. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics along with Bloomfield police executed a search warrant for a third floor apartment at 165 Franklin Street in Bloomfield yesterday morning.
