Gang Members and Accomplices Arrested on Drug Charges

Newark – As the result of two separate investigations, four male suspects, including two alleged members of the Bloods street gang, are scheduled for arraignment later today on multiple drug charges following their arrests on Tuesday by Essex County sheriff’s detectives. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation as part of a heroin distribution investigation at the intersection of Market and Mulberry streets yesterday at 4:00 p.m. Minutes later, the target of the probe, Khasif Parrish, age 27 of Newark, and a suspected Bloods gang member, arrived on the scene where he placed a cell telephone call.
Suspect Arrested on Gun and Aggravated Assault Charges

Newark – An alleged member of the Bloods street gang was arraigned today on weapons and assault charges following his arrest last night by an Essex County sheriff’s officer. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Officer Kevin Macken was on routine quality of life patrol at Branch Brook Park on Monday at 6:00 p.m. when he conducted a random license plate check on a passing black 1996 Acura TL sedan. The check revealed that the license plate belonged to a brown Volvo. Sheriff Fontoura said that Officer Macken immediately activated the overhead lights and siren of his marked unit and pulled the suspect vehicle over in front of 281 Lake Street where the Acura crashed into two parked vehicles.
Task Force Arrests Three Suspects; Recovers Two Guns

Newark – Three male suspects were arrested and two handguns were recovered last night by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and Newark police officers assigned to the Firearms Interdiction Team. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that the task force officers were on patrol in Newark’s North Ward when they observed a group of males standing in the hallway of a building on Wakeman Avenue. “Our officers recognized one of the men from prior encounters,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “At that time, Braulio Lopez, age 19, also spotted the task force and ran into the residence and slammed the door behind him.”
Reward Offers in Two Newark Murders

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura today announced the posting of cash reward offers in two Newark homicides that occurred earlier today. Sheriff Fontoura said his department’s Crimestoppers program will pay up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the two unrelated murders. Condell Walker, age 42, was shot and killed at approximately 7:40 a.m. near the construction site of a shopping complex in the 200 block of Springfield Avenue. Additional details surrounding Walker’s murder were not immediately available. The second fatal shooting occurred a few hours later in the 300 block of 6th Avenue. The victim, Steven Watkins, age 36, was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m. Persons with information about either homicide are urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide/Major Crimes tip line at (877) 847-7432 or (973) 621-4586. Task Force Raids Two Newark Homes

Newark – Armed with search warrants, federal, county and local law enforcement officers last night arrested two male suspect and a female suspect and charged them with multiple narcotics and weapons offenses. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that an F. B. I. SWAT team, supported by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and Newark police officers conducted the first raid on a residence in the 100 block of South 7th Street. Upon entering the home, Andre Nix, age 46, and Rhonda Livinston, age 61 were immediately detained while their apartment was searched. A loaded .40 mm handgun, narcotics and suspected drug proceeds were discovered on a bedroom dresser.
