3 Raids, 5 Arrests, $30,000 in Drugs Seized

Newark – Five male suspects, including three alleged gang members, were arrested yesterday as a result of three plainclothes drug operations conducted by the Essex County Sheriff’s Bureau of Narcotics. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that a search warrant was executed for the third floor apartment, located at 175 Woodside Avenue in Newark, at 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday. Sheriff Fontoura said that when the BON detectives knocked and announced their presence the officers heard people inside the apartment yelling “5-0, 5-0”, in reference to law enforcement officers on the scene. Fearing destruction of evidence, the sheriff’s BON officers made a forced entry into the residence.
3 Suspects Arrested on Gun, Drugs & Assault Charges

Newark – Three suspects, two males and a female, were arraigned this morning on multiple weapons, drug and assault charges following their arrest last night by Essex County sheriff’s officers. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Patrol Division were conducting quality of life operations in Newark’s North Ward at 9:00 p.m. on Monday when their marked unit’s electronic license plate reader signaled that the 2003 Acura station wagon parked in front of 143 Roseville Avenue and containing three occupants had been reported as stolen by Newark police on February 17, 2015. “Our officers then strategically positioned their cruiser in an effort to conduct a motor vehicle stop,” Fontoura said. “However, when the driver of the car spotted our presence he put the car into gear and repeated slammed the Acura into our vehicle in an effort to escape.”
Juvenile Has Sawed-Off Rifle Strapped to Leg

Newark – Three adults, a male and two females, were arraigned this morning on weapons charges following their arrest on Friday by Essex County sheriff’s officers. A sawed-off and defaced .22 caliber rifle was also found strapped to the right leg under the pants of a 17-year-old male during the incident. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Patrol Division conducted a motor vehicle stop late on Friday morning at the intersection of South Orange Avenue and 10th Street where they observed a 2014 rented Kia Rio blocking traffic in the area.
Ice Safety Tips

Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura, coordinator of the Essex County Office of Emergency Management, today issued this fresh water Winter Ice Safety advisory to local residents. “When weather and ice conditions permit ice skating is allowed on the ponds at Verona and Grover Cleveland parks,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “County parks department personnel inspect the safety of the ice conditions at these two parks on a daily basis. If the ice is determined to be unsafe skating is not permitted. Ice skating is also not permitted in any of the other outdoor locations throughout the Essex County park system.”
Drug Raids Net 5 Suspects

Newark – Five suspects were arraigned this morning on multiple drug charges following their arrests yesterday in two separate raids conducted by federal and county narcotics investigators. Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics and agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration executed simultaneous search warrants at two locations as part of an on-going investigation at Wynona Lipman Gardens on Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff Fontoura said the task force officers announced their presence at 133 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard made a forced entry into the ground floor apartment after hearing persons inside the residence yelling “Police, police”.
