Suspect Arrested for Aggravated Assault on Sheriff's Officer

Newark – A Cranford man was arrested last night and charged with aggravated assault on a sheriff’s officer.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Officer Jimmy Rodriguez was on routine quality of life patrol at on Wednesday near the intersection of Badger and Hawthorne Avenues when he observed a silver 2002 Saab make a left turn without signaling.
Rodriguez attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop at West Runyon Street and Irvine Turner Boulevard.As the officer approached the Saab, he observed the driver insert glassine envelopes, the type used to package heroin, into his mouth.
Newark – An armed suspect, driving south in the northbound lanes of McCarter Highway crashed his vehicle into a concrete wall on Friday, was arrested by EssexCounty sheriff’s detectives and arraigned today.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics were on quality of life patrol in the area of Mulberry and Chestnut Streets Friday afternoon when they observed the driver of a 1999 Buick LeSabre operating his vehicle in a reckless manner by weaving in and out of traffic.
Newark – At a ceremony last Wednesday at Veterans Courthouse, Sheriff Armando Fontoura presented the first of more than 130 ballistic vests to Kwaku Amo, the Executive Secretary General of the Council of Ghanaian Associations of New Jersey and Dr. A. Zachary Yamba, the former president of EssexCountyCollege.
The bulletproof vests will be donated by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office to the Nima District Police in Ghana. The still serviceable vests became surplus when federal and state grants allowed the sheriff’s office to upgrade their vests.
Carjacked Tow Truck, Stolen Cars & Stolen Gun Recovered

Newark – A carjacked flatbed tow truck, two stolen cars and a stolen gun were recovered this evening by EssexCounty sheriff’s officers.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department were on quality of life patrol near WeequahicPark at last night when the electronic car theft device in their marked unit indicated a stolen vehicle in the area.
The sheriff’s officers located a 2013 Porshe, reported stolen out of Secaucus, parked in front of 179 Pomona Avenue.Twin Towing was called to haul the vehicle to the impound lot.
