To become an Essex County Sheriff's Officer, candidates must complete in an examination offered by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. Upon completion of the examination, the Civil Service Commission will rank all candidates by score on an Eligibility List. Military veterans are automatically placed at the top of the list.

At times, the Essex County College Police Academy offers an Alternate Route Program wherein individual candidates absorb the cost of police academy training with the hope of gaining employment by a non-Civil Service law enforcement agency.
