Military Assault Weapon Seized; Suspect Charged PDF Print E-mail

NewarkPlainclothes Essex County sheriff’s detectives today seized a loaded military assault rifle and charged a Newark man with multiple weapons charges.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department attempted to execute a non-support warrant early this afternoon on Michael Laurel of 168 Fabyan Place in Newark. When Laurel’s roommate, Jesse Slater, age 30, advised the officers that Laurel was not in the apartment the building’s owner consented to a search of the premises.

Fontoura said that when the sheriff’s detectives entered Slater’s bedroom they observed and confiscated a Norinco SKS, .717 caliber, semi-automatic assault rifle with a high capacity magazine by a nightstand.

“This is a particularly dangerous weapon,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “The assault rifle was also equipped with a 12-inch bayonet which could literally cut a person in half.”

Slater was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Bail on the suspect will be set later today and Slater will be lodged at the county jail pending arraignment.
