4 Juveniles Arrested in "Wilding" Incident PDF Print E-mail

Newark – Four male juveniles were arrested this afternoon at Weequahic Park by Essex County sheriff’s officers and were charged with assaulting two men in separate incidents.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers were on routine patrol near the Weequahic Golf Course this afternoon when they received a report of an apparent “wilding” incident from one of the victims, a 40-year-old Hillside man.

Within moments, a second victim, a 48-year-old man from Middlesex Township, advised the officers that he had also been beaten up by a gang of teenagers a few minutes earlier.

The first victim added that after being assaulted by the teens he came across the gang a second time in the park and one of the juveniles pulled out a knife and threatened him with it, saying “You know what this is for if you say anything”.

The two victims gave the officers a description of their attackers and the four juveniles, three 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old, were taken into custody a short time later in the park without further incident.

The four suspects were positively identified by both victims.

While the two victims suffered an assortment of bruises and abrasions they refused medical attention.

One of the 17-year-olds was charged with two counts of assault and one count each of possession of a weapon, making terroristic threats and witness tampering. The other three juveniles were charged with two counts each of assault.

Following questioning by sheriff’s officers, the four suspects will be placed in the Essex County Youth Detention Facility, pending a hearing in Family Court.
