Carjacking & Kidnap Suspect Arrested PDF Print E-mail
Newark - A suspected carjacker was arraigned today following his arrest early Sunday morning by an Essex County sheriff's officer.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Douglas Brown, age 29, of Newark who was wanted by Jersey City police on carjacking, kidnap, assault and robbery charges was apprehended at 1:26 a.m. Sunday by Sheriff's Officer Guiseppe Forgione at the Exxon gas station parking lot, located at Central Avenue and West Market Street.
Sheriff Fontoura said that Officer Forgione was on routine patrol at the time when his Lo-Jack anti-theft device was alerted to a silver 2007 Honda Accord with one occupant at that location.
Fontoura said that Forgione pinned in the suspect vehicle but Brown rammed the sheriff's cruiser three times in an unsuccessful attempt to flee the scene.
The sheriff added that Brown then attempted to flee the scene on foot but was immediately tackled to the ground by Forgione and taken into custody.
Forgione also recovered a Bryco 380 caliber semi-automatic handgun, a small bag of 'crack' cocaine, a 'crack' pipe and a green woman's handbag which were all in plain view on the passenger's seat of the suspect vehicle.
Sheriff Fontoura noted that less than two hours before Brown's arrest Jersey City police sent out a bulletin for a man who had carjacked, kidnapped and assaulted a 63-year-old New York City woman who had just left a house party in Jersey City at 11:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Brown allegedly jumped into the woman's car at gunpoint and threatened to shoot her if she didn't follow his exact directions.
When the victim made an unspecified turn, Brown allegedly pistol-whipped her and tossed her out of the car.
"Officer Forgione's actions and professionalism are most commendable," Sheriff Fontoura said. "A person high on drugs, carrying a gun and driving around in a stolen car are a sure recipe for mayhem."
Brown's Essex County charges include aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, eluding police, resisting arrest and two counts of receiving stolen property (the Honda and the handbag).
At today's arraignment, Judge Amilkar Velez - Lopez ordered Brown to be held at the Essex County jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.
Further charges against Brown will be filed by Jersey City police.
