Newark – A 15-year-old male was arrested early this morning by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and charged with an armed assault on a male juvenile.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that a 17-year-old male and his juvenile companion were confronted by three male juveniles shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Sunday at Independence Park.

Sheriff Fontoura said that one of the three juveniles, a 15-year-old, pulled a .32 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver on the pair and demanded money. When the two potential victims ran the 15-year-old fired his weapon, striking the 17-year-old in the neck.

As the shooter and his companions fled the scene, the 17-year-old victim managed to make his way to a local drugstore and Newark police were made aware of the incident.

The victim was subsequently transported to University Hospital where he was treated and released.

Fontoura said that sheriff’s detectives and Newark police conducted a joint investigation and ballistics evidence was collected at the scene.

At 1:00 a.m. on Monday, Newark police detained a 15-year-old male juvenile who was acting suspiciously while peering into the interiors of cars parked on Railroad Avenue. The juvenile was placed under arrest when he was found to be carrying a gun.

The gun-carrying juvenile appeared in Family Court later on Monday and was released.

Sheriff Fontoura noted that in the intervening hours a ballistics match was made between the evidence found at the scene of the shooting and the handgun the 15-year-old was carrying four hours after the shooting.

As a result of the joint investigation, the 15-year-old alleged shooter is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

The suspect was again lodged in the Essex County Youth Detention Center where he awaits another hearing in Family Court.
