Orange – With assistance from airborne Essex County Prosecutor’s detectives, three suspects in a stolen vehicle were arrested this morning by Essex County sheriff’s officers.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that at 10:45 a.m. detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics ran the license plate of a red 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee at 12th Avenue and 14th Street in Newark. The vehicle was reported to have been stolen in Newark yesterday.
Sheriff Fontoura said that the driver of the vehicle, Michael Sedita, age 23 of West Orange, spotted the unmarked police car and fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
At that time, prosecutor’s detectives, working a narcotics interdiction detail aboard U. S. Army National Guard helicopter “Essex – 1”, were overhead and observed the stolen car travel to 378 Hawthorne Street in Orange where it skidded on ice and crashed into a snow bank ten minutes later.
The three suspects bailed out of the Jeep unharmed and attempted to flee the scene on foot.
Fontoura said that officers from his department’s Patrol Division were in the area and immediately placed Sedita and one of the two passengers, 23-year-old Jeffrey Maxwell of Newark, under arrest.
The third suspect, Terrence Hewett, age 25 of Orange, was tracked to a garage, located at 251 Cleveland Street in Orange, and he was placed in handcuffs after a brief struggle with the sheriff’s officers.
All three suspects were charged with receiving stolen property and resisting arrest. Sedita was additionally charged with eluding police while Hewett was also charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and burglary.
Sedita was found to be the subject of open warrants issued by the Newark and West Orange municipal courts. Hewell had open warrants issued by the Newark and Union Township municipal courts.
After questioning at the sheriff’s Patrol Division headquarters, all three suspects were processed and lodged in the Essex County Correctional Facility. A speedy bail will be set later today and the suspects are scheduled for arraignment on Friday.
