Newark – An alleged Bloods street gang member was arrested late yesterday afternoon by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and weapons charges were filed against him.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau on Narcotics were conducting plainclothes operations in the city’s North Ward on Tuesday when they spotted a 17-year-old Bronx male walking along North 6th Street.

The suspect stopped in front of 386 North 6th Street and the BON detectives observed as he removed two handguns from his jacket pockets and hid them in bushes.

The suspect then continued walking and sat on the stoop of a nearby building where he joined three other males.

Sheriff Fontoura said the BON detectives moved in and detained all four individuals while the bushes were searched.

Recovered from the bushes were two revolvers, a silver, .38 caliber Wingun and a black, .38 caliber Taurus.

The 17-year-old male was placed under arrest and charged with two counts of the unlawful possession of a weapon.

The other three males were records checked and Oscar Cortez, age 22, of Newark was found to be the subject of an open warrant issued by the North Bergen criminal court.

The Bronx teen was lodged at the Essex County Juvenile Detention Facility where he awaits a hearing in Family Court. Cortez was released and is scheduled to appear at the municipal court in North Bergen on October 3rd.
