Newark – Essex County sheriff’s officers late yesterday afternoon recovered three stolen cars and a stolen motorcycle at adjoining locations in the city’s South Ward while on routine quality of life patrol.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers Michael Kihlberg and Chris Bozios were on patrol on Ridgewood Avenue when their marked unit’s receiver picked up multiple electronic stolen vehicle alerts.
The electronic pings led the officers to a three-bay garage behind 204 Ridgewood Avenue. The garage’s door was ajar and the officers observed a 2002 Acura RSX. The Acura’s engine was discovered outside the vehicle on the ground. The Acura was reported stolen out of Kenilworth earlier that morning.
Also recovered at that location were a 2000 Jeep Cherokee, reported stolen out of Hoboken on August 31st, and a 1999 Ford van, reported stolen out of Newark on September 28th. Additionally, an assortment of car parts, including tires, wheels, bumpers and engine parts were also recovered at the scene.
In the backyard of 180 Ridgewood Avenue, the sheriff’s officers recovered a 1999 Suzuki motorcycle that was reported stolen out of Newark on May 4, 2012.
While no arrests were made yesterday an investigation is on-going. “The garage contained all the classic earmarks of a chop-shop operation,” said Sheriff Fontoura.
