Newark – In a dawn raid at a city residence, Essex County sheriff’s officers arrested two suspects and filed weapons and drug charges against them.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant for 227 Court Street earlier today.

After failing to respond to repeated knocks on the door by the sheriff’s officers, the BON detectives, fearing the destruction of evidence, made a forced entry into the townhouse.

Jonathan Benjamin, age 24, and his girlfriend, Lemica Ausbon, age 28, were detained while the premises was searched.

In the couple’s bedroom closet, the sheriff’s detectives discovered and seized a loaded, .45 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun that had been reported stolen out of Henderson, North Carolina on June 21, 2012.

In the same closet, the BON detectives also discovered and seized medicine bottles, containing 408 oxycodone tablets and 118 Xanax tablets. In addition, three small bags of marijuana were recovered.

The street value of the narcotics is in excess of $13,000.

Benjamin and Ausbon were charged with three counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of the Morton Street School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Betty Shabazz Village. The two suspects were also charged with possession of a weapon while committing a narcotics crime, receiving stolen property and conspiracy to violate New Jersey’s narcotics laws.

Newark municipal court Judge Vanessa Williams Powell set bail on Benjamin at $50,000 cash bond only. Ausbon’s bail is $25,000 cash bond only.

Both suspects were lodged at the county jail where they await arraignment on today’s charges.
