Suspect Arraigned on Kidnap, Sex Assault, Weapons Charges PDF Print E-mail

Newark – Derrick Baker of Newark, age 26, charged with kidnapping, robbery and three counts of aggravated sexual assault was arraigned today in criminal Central Judicial Processing court.

Baker and a 17-year-old male accomplice, also from Newark, are accused of kidnapping an 18-year-old female college female on Lyons Avenue in Irvington at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Monday.

The victim had just exited a New Jersey Transit bus at the intersection of Coit Street and was immediately accosted verbally by the suspects. Baker and the juvenile suspect followed the victim for three blocks along Lyons Avenue.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura said the suspects allegedly pulled a gun on the victim at the intersection of Chester and Lyons avenues and took her by force into Irvington Park where she was robbed and sexually assaulted by both suspects.

Within hours of the incident, detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s and Essex County Prosecutor’s Offices arrested the two suspects.

At today’s arraignment, Judge Roslyn Holmes – Grant ordered Baker held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $250,000 cash bond only. Also, following a hearing in Family Court today, the male juvenile was lodged at the Essex County Youth Detention Center on the same charges.
