Adult & Juvenile Drug Suspects Arrested PDF Print E-mail

Newark – A male suspect was arraigned today on drug distribution charges following his arrest last night along with two 16-year-old male juveniles.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department were on patrol in West Side Park shortly before 7:00 p.m. when they observed several hand-to-hand transactions between the three suspects and passersby in front of 523 South 14th Street, a known drug distribution location.

Prior to each transaction, one of the juvenile males would walk down the alleyway to the rear of the building and return with items that were exchanged for cash.

Sheriff Fontoura said that when the three suspects entered the building’s vestibule the Patrol Division officers moved in to further investigate.

When the officers entered the vestibule, one of the juveniles attempted to discard seven glassine envelopes, stamped “JOKERS WILD” in purple ink. The envelopes contained heroin.

The juvenile was place under arrest along with his two accomplices, including Allen Calloway, age 19. All three suspects are from Newark.

Following questioning, the suspects led the officers to the rear of the building and an additional 70 glassine envelopes of heroin were discovered hidden beneath the bumper of a disabled car.

All three suspects were charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of 15th Avenue School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of West Side Park. Calloway was additionally charged with two counts of employing a juvenile in a drug distribution scheme.

At today’s arraignment, Judge Roslyn Holmes – Grant ordered Calloway held at the county jail in lieu of $40,000 cash bond only. The juveniles were lodged at the Essex County Youth Detention Center where they await a hearing in Family Court on Tuesday night’s charges.
