4 Arrested: Semi-Auto Handgun, Carjacked Vehicle and Stolen Car Recovered PDF Print E-mail

Newark – A semi-automatic handgun, a carjacked vehicle and a stolen car were recovered by Essex County sheriff’s officers and four juvenile males from Newark were arrest in separate incidents this morning and Saturday evening.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department were on patrol at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday when they spotted a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am reported carjacked in Newark on Friday night near the intersection of Clifton and 7th Avenues.

Sheriff Fontoura said the suspect vehicle was followed and surrounded when it pulled into a parking lot at 45 Cutler Street.

The driver, age 16, ran from the vehicle and was captured and arrested after a brief foot chase. A .380 caliber Ruger handgun was found on the driver’s seat and seized by the sheriff’s officers.

The suspect was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest. He was lodged at the Essex County Youth Detention Center where he awaits a hearing in Family Court.

At 8:40 a.m. today, sheriff’s officers on patrol at Weequahic Park spotted a 200 Chrysler Voyager reported stolen in Newark on Sunday parked on the grassy Oval and occupied by three juvenile suspects.

The driver of the stolen car, age 16, and his two accomplices, ages 15 and 16, ran from the scene but were quickly taken into custody. They were each charged with receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.

The driver was lodged at the Essex County Youth Detention Center where he awaits a hearing in Family Court. The two accomplices were released to their parents and will also receive a hearing in Family Court on today’s charges.
