Irvington Gun/Drugs Arrest

Newark – Two suspects were arraigned today on multiple weapons and drug charges following their arrests on Friday by Essex County sheriff’s detectives.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics and Patrol Division executed a search warrant for the first floor apartment at 497 South 20th Street in Irvington early on Friday afternoon as part of on-going drug investigations in that area.

“As soon as our officers pulled up to the target location, a suspect, later identified as Malik Proctor, 27 of Newark, who had been standing in front of the residence ran from the scene,” Sheriff Fontoura said.  “As Proctor ran, he discarded two vials of ‘crack’ cocaine to the ground.  The suspect entered a nearby residence where he was quickly captured and placed under arrest.  Proctor was found to be in possession of an additional 58 vials of ‘crack’ and $23 in cash.”

Simultaneously, the search warrant was executed for the residence of Roberto “Chico” Oyola.

“The search of Oyola’s apartment yielded a fully loaded, .40 caliber Ultra Star semi-automatic handgun, two boxes of ammunition, small amounts of heroin and ‘crack’ cocaine and a wide assortment of narcotics processing and packaging paraphernalia,” Fontoura noted. “Also seized was $45 in cash.”

Oyola was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon while committing a narcotics offense, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Sacred Heart School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public housing complex.

Proctor was charged with possession of CDS, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Sacred Heart School, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of public housing, burglary and resisting arrest.

At today’s arraignments, bail on Oyola was set at $100,000 and bail on Proctor was set at $50,000.

Both suspects were lodged at the county jail.
