Newark – A male suspect with a long criminal history of drug arrests was apprehended last night by detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s Bureau of Narcotics.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated detectives from his department were conducting plain clothes surveillance operations in Newark’s North Ward at 6:40 p.m. on Monday along Stone Street between 6th and Park avenues when they observed a double parked 2014 Chevrolet Malibu obstructing the flow of traffic.

“When our officers moved in to investigate, the driver, 32-year-old Angel Negron, attempted but failed to close a dashboard compartment hidden behind the vehicle’s radio,” Sheriff Fontoura said.  “After Negron was ordered out of the car our detectives could plainly see multiple clear plastic bags, containing 480 heroin-filled envelopes, stamped “Scooby Doo” in blue ink, and 38 grams of marijuana, in the hiding place.”

Negron was immediately placed under arrest.  During a pat-down search of the suspect for officer safety the suspect was found to be in possession an additional 20 grams of marijuana and $291 in drug sale proceeds.

The street value of the narcotics is estimated at $5,500.

Negron was charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of the Benjamin Franklin School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public housing complex.

Negron was also issued motor vehicle summonses for double parking, obstructing traffic and CDS in a motor vehicle.

Negron was lodged at the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing on Monday’s charges.
