Newark – A suspect with a lengthy criminal history was arrested on multiple weapons and drug charges late this morning by a law enforcement task force comprised of Essex County sheriff’s detectives and Newark police officers.

    Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics and Tactical Response Team along with Newark police officers executed a search warrant shortly before noon on Wednesday at a townhouse, located at 334 Irvine Turner Boulevard.

    “Here, our officers made a forced entry into the residence, fearing destruction of evidence, and detained the target of our on-going investigation, Corey Whitehead, 49,” Sheriff Fontoura said.  “As a result of our search, a fully loaded, 9mm, Taurus semi-automatic weapon with an extended capacity magazine, a fully loaded and defaced, .25 caliber, Titan semi-automatic pistol, three heroin-filled glassine envelopes, stamped ‘GOLDFINGER’ in red ink, four vials of ‘crack’ cocaine, and an assortment of drug packaging and processing materials were seized.”

    Whitehead was charged with two counts each of the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public housing complex.

    Whitehead was further charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a weapon while committing a narcotics crime, possession of a defaced weapon and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

    Whitehead was lodged at the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing on today’s charges.

 Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura today announced a cash reward of up to $5,000 that leads to the arrest of the person or persons who placed an improvised explosive device on a headstone at B’nai Abraham Cemetery on South 19th Street in Newark on Sunday.

“The device, a commercial firework that was attached to a can of lubricant, was discovered by one of our officers who was working a security detail at the cemetery,” Sheriff Fontoura stated.  “Our officer took all appropriate actions in having the cemetery evacuated and in contacting our Bomb Squad.  The device was immediately rendered safe and removed to our bomb headquarters.  The device has subsequently been turned over to the F. B. I. for their investigation.”

Sheriff Fontoura’s department has traditionally provided visitation security to the Jewish community at cemeteries throughout Essex County during the High Holy Days.

“This reward offer is being made by our Crimestoppers program,” Sheriff Fontoura noted.

Reward Increased for Murder Victim

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura’s Crime Stoppers Program has increased the reward from up to $10,000 to up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Deborah Burton, a 62-year-old grandmother from Maplewood.

Burton was fatally shot in Newark on March 13, in the area of 43 Third Street. The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Burton was taken to University Hospital and was pronounced dead at 2:31 p.m.
