Newark – A reputed member of the Crips street gang was arrested last night and multiple weapons charges were filed against him.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics teamed with officers from the Newark Police Division’s Special Enforcement Bureau to conduct quality of life patrols in the city’s 4th police precinct in response to recent shootings and open-air drug trafficking in the area of South 17th Street and 14th Avenue.

“As the task force drove past a townhouse, located at 450 South 17th Street, at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, an individual, later identified as Isaiah Ketchens, 25, walked away from a large crowd of people who had gathered there.” Sheriff Fontoura said.  “Ketchens walked right in front of our unmarked cruisers, forcing them to come to a stop.  As he strolled across the street, our officers could clearly see the handle of a gun protruding from his pants pocket.”

Ketchens opened and entered a parked 2008 Honda Pilot but one of the detectives prevented him from closing the door and starting the car.

“With the entire task force now having descended upon the vehicle, an intense struggle to take full control of Ketchens ensued,” Fontoura noted.  “During the skirmish with the suspect, our officers discovered that he was carrying a second weapon in a fanny pack that was worn across his chest.”

Ketchens was forcibly removed from the vehicle and handcuffed.

“The two weapons, a .40 caliber, Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun, loaded with hollow point ammunition, and a .25 caliber, Phoenix Arms semi-automatic handgun, were seized,” the sheriff noted.

Ketchens was charged with two counts of the unlawful possession of a weapon and one count each of possession of prohibited devices (hollow point bullets) and resisting arrest by violence.

Ketchens was also found to be the subject of an open warrant issued by the Durham County (NC) Sheriff’s Office for probation violation and a warrant issued by the Newark municipal court for contempt.

The suspect was lodged at the Essex County jail where he awaits a bail hearing on Monday’s charges.

Newark – As a result of two plainclothes investigations last night and on Friday by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and officers from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, four suspects were arrested and $2,000 in heroin and more than $10,000 in cash was seized.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics were working solo Monday night as they drove their unmarked vehicle through the intersection of South 19th Street and Avon Avenue in Newark where they observed Ronnel Hope Green, 25, standing on the corner as he counted items contained in a black plastic bag.

“Due to their experience and training, our detectives believed the items to be heroin-filled glassine envelopes,” Sheriff Fontoura said.  “When they moved in to further investigate their suspicions proved to be correct as Hope Green was found to be in possession 74 decks of heroin and $65 in alleged drug sale proceeds.”

On Friday, the federal/county law enforcement task force conducted surveillance operations at the intersection of Newark’s Irvine Turner Boulevard and Alpine Street.

Here, the task force encountered competing drug distributions operations, one by a solo male suspect and another by a male suspect and his female accomplice.

“Both drug operations employed a parked Honda vehicle which was used as the ‘stash’ for the narcotics,” Fontoura noted.  “While the female, later identified as Alya Evans, 37, remained in her vehicle, both males operated on the sidewalk and were seen engaging passersby in conversation which resulted in exchanging items for cash.”

Investigating further, Kevin Rogers, 33, was found to be in possession of 211 heroin-filled glassine envelopes and a search of the vehicle that he and Evans had traveled in revealed $10,040 in cash in the glove compartment.

Their competitor, suspect Robert Cobb, 25, was found to be in possession of 79 decks of heroin.

“It was imperative that we and our federal partners shutdown these competing distribution rings operating in the same exact location as gunfire is often the end result in a fight for territorial rights,” Sheriff Fontoura pointed out.

All four suspects are from Newark.

Hope Green was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.  He was also found to the subject of an open Superior Court warrant for contempt of court.

Rogers, Evans and Cobb were each charged with possession of CDS, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Malcolm X Shabazz School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public housing complex.

Rogers and Evans were also charged with conspiracy to violate New Jersey’s narcotics laws and Rogers was found to the subject of 7 open warrants issued by the municipal courts of Newark, Elizabeth, Linden and Union Township.

The three male suspects were lodged at the county jail where they await bail hearings.  Evans was released on her own recognizance and will be arraigned on June 14th.
