Administration - The Training Unit

The Training Unit coordinates the continual in-service training of Sheriff’s officers, recruits and deputies.

Examples of our ongoing training include the following:

  • K-9 handlers, canines, and Bomb Unit technicians require annual re-certification in addition to the specialized training they receive.
  • All officers complete semi-annual firearms re-qualification.
  • All personnel receive annual refresher courses in bloodborne pathogen awareness, domestic violence, as well as various attorney general guidelines.

All law enforcement officers are required to be trained in Hazmat awareness, WMD awareness, incident command systems and counterterrorism awareness.

In addition to required training, the Sheriff’s Office sends officers to a wide variety of training courses including internet safety, document fraud, grant writing, cultural diversity, gang awareness, narcotics investigation and warrant service.

The Training Unit also provides instructors to the Essex County College Police Academy. Many of our officers are subject matter experts in such diverse fields as fingerprint analysis, instructor certification, firearms and emergency medical response. These experts train police recruits from all agencies in Essex County and other out-of-county agencies.

Many of our instructors must undergo rigorous annual recertification courses to maintain their status as law enforcement instructors. The Training Unit coordinates and schedules all training courses received or taught by ECSO personnel.
