16-year-old male suspect arrested and charged with multiple weapons and drug offenses

Newark – Essex County sheriff’s detectives today arrested a 16-year-old male suspect and charged him with multiple weapons and drug offenses.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Thursday a squad of sheriff’s detectives observed a suspected narcotics transaction at 287 C Irvine Turner Boulevard.

The sheriff said a male suspect, loitering out front, walked to a barbeque grill at the rear of the building as a result of a conversation with a waiting passer-by. Upon returning to the front of the building, the suspect exchanged a small package for money.

The sheriff’s detectives moved in and detained the suspect while inspecting the grill. The grill was found to contain a fully loaded, 9mm, semi-automatic Llama handgun and a fully loaded, .38 caliber, Taurus revolver. 800 decks of heroin, secreted in a yellow plastic grocery bag and packaged for street distribution, was also discovered in the grill.

The juvenile who provided the sheriff’s officers with a false name and address was arrested and charged with two counts each of possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, possession of a weapon while committing a CDS crime, and one count each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Louise Spencer School, possession of CDS with intent to distribute with 500 feet of Jesse Allen Park, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Grace Manor public housing and hindering apprehension.

The suspect was lodged in the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center where he awaits a hearing in Family Court on today’s charges.
