Suspect Arraigned on Drug and Weapons Charges

Newark – A New Brunswick man was arraigned today on weapons and drug charges following his arrest on Saturday.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Patrol Division officers were dispatched to the basketball courts near Elizabeth Avenue in Weequahic Park on Saturday afternoon after an anonymous caller telephoned central dispatch and reported seeing and describing a suspect with a gun.

Sheriff Fontoura said the officers immediately spotted a man matching the caller’s description on a bench by the courts. A search of the suspect, 20-year-old Clyde Cox, yielded a fully loaded, .22 caliber, JC Higgins Model 88 handgun and 30 decks of heroin. The anonymous caller remained in the park and positively identified Cox as the man he had seen earlier with the gun.

Cox was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, the unlawful possession of a weapon while committing a CDS crime, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Cavalry Christian School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Weequahic Park.

At today’s arraignment, Judge Amilkar Velez – Lopez ordered the suspect held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $60,000 cash bond only.
