Two Supects Arrested on Drug and Gun Charges

Newark – Two suspects were charged with narcotics crimes and a handgun was recovered last night by Essex County sheriff’s officers.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department were on quality of life patrol shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Monday when they observed a 2000 Buick Century traveling north on Elizabeth Avenue at a high rate of speed.

Sheriff Fontoura said the suspect vehicle was pulled over at West Peddie Street and Johnson Avenue. While the officers called the license plate number into the sheriff’s Central Communications they noticed the driver, later identified as Naiem Moore, age 24 of Newark, and his passenger, 24-year-old Jaquil Johnson, also of Newark, moving around in the Buick and reaching under their seats.

When the officers approached they noticed a clear plastic bag, later found to contain marijuana, on the driver’s floorboard.

The suspects were ordered out of the car and two glassine envelops of heroin, stamped “KO” in red ink, were found on Johnson’s passenger seat.

In removing the narcotics, the sheriff’s officers found a fully loaded, .32 caliber, Davis Industies semi-automatic handgun under the driver’s seat.

Moore was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for faulty taillights, driving while on the suspended list, careless driving and possession of CDS in a vehicle.

Judge Bahir Kamil ordered Moore held at the county jail in lieu of $70,000 cash bond only. He will be arraigned on the charges later this week.

Johnson was charged with possession of CDS and was issued a summons to appear at a later court date.
