3 Arrested; 4 Weapons Seized

NewarkEssex County sheriff’s detectives today arrested three suspects and recovered four weapons, including a military-style assault rifle and three semi-automatic handguns.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department executed an open bench warrant for assault for Alwahid Reeds this morning at 298 Schley Street in the city’s South Ward.

Sheriff Fontoura said that when Reeds, age 35, opened the door to his apartment the sheriff’s officers observed the butt end of Norico SKS assault rifle protruding from a duffle bag on the floor of an open closet.

Reeds was placed under arrest along with Terrance Bradley, age 21, and, Rasheen Glaspie, age 21, both of Newark, who were also in the apartment.

Fontoura said the apartment was searched and, in another closet in the apartment’s hallway, the sheriff’s detectives recovered a .40 caliber Hi-Point pistol, a .40 caliber Glock handgun and a 9mm Cobray handgun in a cloth bag.  All of the weapons were loaded and the Glock was determined to have been stolen out of Newark on June 12, 2012.

“This weaponry recovered today represents enough firepower to start a revolution in some small countries,” Fontoura observed.

In addition, the sheriff’s officers also recovered a large cache of ammunition of various calibers.

Reeds, Bradley and Glaspie were charged with four counts each of the possession of a weapon and one count of possession of illegal hollow point bullets.  Reeds and Bradley were also charged with four counts each of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

The suspects will be arraigned on today’s charges later this week.
