2 Arrested with Guns and Drugs

Newark – Two suspects were taken into custody in separate arrests on weapons and drug charges last night and early this morning by Essex County sheriff’s officers. A third suspect was also arrested on a prior drug charge.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura said that detectives from his department executed an arrest warrant for Rajohn Eley, age 33, at 44 Homestead Park in Newark. Eley was wanted for possession of narcotics on an earlier charge.

Fontoura said that when the sheriff’s detectives searched Eley’s apartment they found his older brother, John Eley, age 41, in a front bedroom. On the elder Eley’s television stand the sheriff’s officers discovered a fully loaded, Smith and Wesson, 9mm, semi-automatic handgun and 35 grams of cocaine in a plastic sandwich bag. The gun was found to have been stolen out of Warrenton, Virginia in 2010.

Both Eley brothers were placed under arrest.

Sheriff Fontoura added that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted a surveillance operation last night at the intersection of Cutler Street and 7th Avenue in Newark.

At that time, the BON detectives observed a male, later identified as 18-year-old Jazir “Pop Bang” Gordon, with a bicycle loitering in the known high drug trafficking area. When a male passerby engaged Gordon in brief conversation, the suspect exchanged an item from his pants pocket with the male for cash.

Believing they had witnessed a drug transaction, the BON officers announced their presence and moved in to further investigate.

Gordon then removed an object from his front waistband, tossed it through a gate into a vacant lot and attempted to run from the scene.

After a brief foot pursuit, the sheriff’s BON detectives tackled Gordon to the ground. A search of the suspect yielded four envelopes of heroin, stamped “007” in red ink.

The object tossed into the lot was retrieved and found to be a defaced, fully loaded, .40 caliber, Hi Point semi-automatic handgun.

John Eley was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, possession of a weapon while committing a CDS crime, possession of illegal hollow point bullets, receiving stolen property (the handgun), possession of CDS, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of University High School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Homestead Park.
