Weapons and Drug Suspects Arrested & Arraigned

Newark – Two male suspects were arraigned today on weapons and drug charges following their arrest on Monday by officers from the Essex County Sheriff's Bureau of Narcotics.


Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that BON detectives conducted a surveillance operation in the area of South 8th Street late Monday afternoon as a result of numerous neighborhood complaints about drug trafficking at that location.


During the plainclothes operation, the BON officers observed two men, later identified as Effron Bass, age 40, and Alshaquan Brown, age 22, both of Newark, conduct what appeared to be a narcotics sale from a white van that was parked nearby.

Newark – A suspect was arraigned today on multiple drug charges following his arrest on Monday night by Essex County sheriff’s officers.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant for the second floor apartment at 26 – 28 Avon Avenue just before 10:00 p.m. on Monday.

After surrounding the perimeter of the building, BON detectives knocked on the apartment’s door, announced their presence and heard people scurrying from within the apartment. Fearing the destruction of evidence, the sheriff’s officers entered the unlocked apartment.

Drug Seller & Buyers Arrested

Newark – Following a vehicular assault on Essex County sheriff’s detectives, an alleged drug suspect and his two clients were arrested today.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that because of numerous neighborhood complaints of drug trafficking in the area of Frelinghuysen Avenue and Mitchell Place his department’s Bureau of Narcotics conducted plainclothes surveillance operations at that location this morning.

Shortly before noon, the BON detectives observed a 2007 Toyota station wagon with Nevada license plates pull up at the intersection and the officers witnessed what they believed was a drug transaction.

FEMA Extends NJ Deadline for Disaster Assistance

At the request of the state, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is extending the registration deadline for renters, homeowners and business owners who suffered damage from Hurricane Irene.

Those affected by the storm and flooding, Aug. 27 – Sept. 5, now have until Nov. 30 to register for disaster assistance.

Suspects Arrested on Drug and Assault Charges

Newark – Two suspects were arraigned today on drug and assault charges following their arrest on Monday by Essex County sheriff’s officers.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Terrance Jenkins, age 29, of Orange was driving a 2007 Jeep Cherokee near Madison and Treacy Avenues when he sped away from a Newark police cruiser which had been following the suspect.

Fontoura said that moments later the suspect vehicle was picked up by a sheriff’s vehicle that was on patrol in the vicinity of West Side Park at 10th Street and Rose Terrace. The Jeep suddenly accelerated directly at the sheriff’s cruiser and forced it off the road.
