Newark – Essex County sheriff’s officers yesterday arrested a suspect wanted by East Orange police for burglary.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Officer Dennis Kihlberg was on-duty in the area of South 20th Street and 19th Avenue shortly before noon on Monday when he heard a police transmission via SPEN radio that East Orange police were pursuing a brown Chevrolet Suburban with South Carolina registration.

Fontoura said that moments later the suspect vehicle passed by Kihlberg’s location. Kihlberg followed the suspect vehicle while sheriff’s Officer Christopher Dickschied positioned his vehicle in front of the Suburban.

The sheriff said that Kihlberg activated his overhead lights and siren. The vehicle pulled over on 19th Avenue with Kihlberg and Dickschied boxing in the suspect vehicle from front and rear.

The suspect, later identified as Ernest DeWitt, age 45, of Vineland, New Jersey was ordered out of the car and was place under arrest without incident. At this time, Deputy Chief Woodson and Officer Colbert of the East Orange Police Department arrived on the scene and positively identifying the suspect vehicle which had recently fled from a burglary scene.

DeWitt was turned over to East Orange authorities and was later charged with the crime.
