Carjacking Suspect Arrested PDF Print E-mail

Newark – A suspected carjacker and his cohort were arrested this afternoon by Essex County sheriff’s officers.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that a white 2006 Dodge Durango, traveling west on West Market Street, triggered a positive Lo-Jack alarm in the marked vehicle of Officer Dennis Kihlberg who was on patrol near Veterans Courthouse today at 12:30 p.m. Kihlberg pulled the vehicle over at 212 West Market Street.

Today at 10:30 a.m., Nigel Lynch, age 42, threatened the female driver of the Durango with a large brick. The woman fled from the scene on foot and Lynch drove off with the car. The incident occurred at 114 Stuyvesant Avenue.

Nigel Lynch, age 42, was charged with carjacking, receiving stolen property and hindering apprehension for giving a false name to the arresting officer. His passenger, Stephen Johnson, age 48, was charged with receiving stolen property. Johnson was also found to be the subject an open burglary warrant issued by the Newark municipal court.

Following questioning by sheriff’s detectives, the two suspects were lodged at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
