Sheriff's Holiday Toy Drive Concludes PDF Print E-mail

Newark – The final phase of the Essex County Sheriff’s Holiday Toy Drive for the Needy which began last week was launched today from Veterans Courthouse when a convoy of pick-up trucks filled with games, toys, winter clothing and holiday meals began delivery operations throughout the county.

“This year we mark the 20th anniversary of our toy drive,” noted Sheriff Armando Fontoura. “As we close out the year with our annual toy drive and Thanksgiving Food Drive, we commend our officers, civilian staff and our private sector partners for their continued generosity, especially in light of our troubled economy.”

Once again, sheriff’s officers and their partners contributed more than 2,000 high quality toys to the cause. Additionally, winter coats, boots, gloves, scarves and hats were provided to needy children.

Sheriff Fontoura and his officers also delivered a large amount of food to local soup kitchens for winter meals for the homeless and unemployed.

In all, youngsters who participate in more than 20 Essex County social service agency programs, religious organizations and schools and scores of individual needy families received holiday gifts and meals from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
