Newark – A city man with prior arrests on gun and drug charges was again arrested this morning by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and new weapons and narcotics charges were filed against him.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that detectives from his department’s Fugitive Squad attempted to serve an arrest warrant for Terrel Thomas, age 23, at the second floor apartment at 304 Weequahic Avenue early on Wednesday. Thomas was wanted for failing to appear in court on a child support matter.

When the sheriff’s officers arrived at the scene they were met by Thomas’s roommate, Sharif Patterson, age 23, who advised the detectives that Thomas was not on the premises.

In a search of the apartment, the sheriff’s detectives discovered and seized a fully loaded, .40 caliber, semi-automatic, Ruger handgun from Patterson’s bedroom dresser.

On top of Patterson’s dresser, the sheriff’s officers seized 21 grams of ‘crack’ cocaine, 13 grams of heroin, 55 grams of marijuana and 5 Percocet tablets.

“From the looks of it, Patterson was running a drug variety store”, noted Sheriff Fontoura. The illegal narcotics is valued at approximately $5,000.

Patterson was charged with four counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of CDS with intent to distribute. The suspect was additionally charged with possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of New Jersey Day School, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon while committing a CDS crime and the unlawful possession of a weapon.

Following further questioning by sheriff’s detectives, Patterson will be lodged at the county jail.

At this time, bail had not been set on Patterson.
