Newark – Sheriff Armando Fontoura today announced a cash reward of up to $5,000 that leads to the arrest of the person or persons who placed an improvised explosive device on a headstone at B’nai Abraham Cemetery on South 19th Street in Newark on Sunday.

“The device, a commercial firework that was attached to a can of lubricant, was discovered by one of our officers who was working a security detail at the cemetery,” Sheriff Fontoura stated.  “Our officer took all appropriate actions in having the cemetery evacuated and in contacting our Bomb Squad.  The device was immediately rendered safe and removed to our bomb headquarters.  The device has subsequently been turned over to the F. B. I. for their investigation.”

Sheriff Fontoura’s department has traditionally provided visitation security to the Jewish community at cemeteries throughout Essex County during the High Holy Days.

“This reward offer is being made by our Crimestoppers program,” Sheriff Fontoura noted.

Anyone with further information about this incident is urged to contact the sheriff’s Crimestoppers 24/7 hotline at 973-877-TIPS.  All calls to Crimestoppers will be kept confidential.
