Newark – A male suspect was arrested on Thursday by Essex County sheriff’s detectives and drug charges were filed against him.

As part of on-going drug investigations in the city’s North Ward, Sheriff Armando Fontoura said that detectives from his department’s Bureau of Narcotics executed a search warrant for apartment “F” at 259 Broadway late yesterday morning.

“The target of our investigation, Shannon ‘Shake’ Wheeler, age 40, was detained in his apartment as it was searched,” Sheriff Fontoura said.  “Recovered and seized inside Wheeler’s residence were 710 heroin-filled glassine envelops, stamped ‘BUTTER’ in red ink, 49 vials of ‘crack’ cocaine and a bag containing $3,500 in cash.”

Wheeler was charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Rafael Hernandez School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Janice Cromer Village public housing complex.

Wheeler was lodged at the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing on Thursday’s charges.
