Newark – An unconscious motorist was arrested in the city’s North Ward on Saturday afternoon by Essex County sheriff’s officers and weapons and drug charges were filed against him.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Patrol Division were conducting routine quality of life operations near Branch Brook Park when they observed a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped and blocking traffic near the intersection of North 6th Street and Park Avenue on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
“In the driver’s seat and passed out was Jasson Duffy, 29, of Asbury Park,” Sheriff Fontoura said. “The vehicle reeked of burnt marijuana and on the front passenger seat our officers discovered a 9mm Glock semi-automatic handgun, loaded with illegal hollow point bullets, and a zip-lock bag filled with marijuana. The gun was found to have been stolen out of Gastonia, North Carolina, in June 2017.”
EMS was called to the scene. The suspect regained consciousness, was placed under arrest and was transported to UMDNJ for treatment.
Duffy was charged the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow point bullets, receiving stolen property and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. The suspect was also issued numerous motor vehicle summonses.
Later in the day, Duffy was cleared at the hospital and placed in the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing
