Newark – A city man was arrested last night on multiple weapons charges by a law enforcement task force comprised of Essex County sheriff’s detectives and Irvington police officers.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that the task force was on proactive quality of life patrol in Newark’s West Ward on Monday evening when they observed a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling eastbound on 14th Avenue in careless manner.

“The driver, later identified as Dishawn Floyd, 50, of Newark, almost struck a pedestrian as the Jeep made a right turn onto Littleton Avenue,” Sheriff Fontoura said.

In conducting a motor vehicle stop of the Jeep, the officers watched as Floyd threw a black bag into the back seat.

“A .45 caliber Ruger Black Hawk revolver spilled out of the bag,” Fontoura noted.  “The gun was found to have been stolen out of Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 2, 2016.”

Floyd was placed under arrest without further incident and he was charged with the possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and receiving stolen property.  The suspect was also issued motor vehicle summonses for careless driving, failure to wear a seat belt and driving without a license.

Floyd was lodged at the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing.
